App Blocker With an Accountability Partner
Locked In is an iPhone app that blocks distracting apps, by time, by place, or on demand. Its App Store tagline is "Text a Friend to Unblock Apps": with Guardian (Pro), a friend you pick approves or declines by text when you try to end a block early. It's a friend keeping you honest, not a hard lock.
Is there an app blocker where a friend keeps me honest?
Yes. Several iPhone app blockers bring a friend into the decision. In Locked In (Pro), you can choose a Guardian: when you want to end a block early, you can send them a request by text, and they answer it on a get-lock-in.com web page from the link in the text; they install nothing. Requests expire after 15 minutes, and you can always choose the math problems or the typed phrase instead. It works through social pressure: a friend keeps you honest.
Is it right for you? It depends what stops you. If knowing a friend will see your request is enough to keep you honest, a Guardian works well. If you need a lock you can't get around at all, no self-installed blocker is that: Locked In also offers other unblock options and has no strict mode. Free option: have a friend hold your Screen Time passcode.
How a Guardian works in Locked In
- Choose a Guardian: someone you trust, such as a friend, partner or family member.
- When you try to end a block early (Pro), "Unblock Early?" offers three choices: solve three quick addition problems, type "I am choosing to break my focus session", or Request permission from partner.
- If you pick your partner and tap Send Request, the request goes as a text from your own phone through Messages.
- Your Guardian answers it on a get-lock-in.com web page, using the link in your text. They install nothing. Requests expire after 15 minutes.
- There's no wait timer.
What a Guardian can and can't do
- It adds a person to the decision. Having to ask is often the point.
- It isn't enforcement. You could still pick another unblock option, and deleting Locked In or turning off its Screen Time access removes its blocks (no strict mode).
- Your Guardian doesn't get push notifications or an app, and Locked In sends no deletion alerts.
Other ways to get an accountability partner
- Apple Screen Time: have a friend choose your Screen Time passcode, so you have to ask them to change limits. Free, but they need to be with you to type it.
- Other apps with partner approval: LockPact, Warden, Keymate, Jolt, Para and Clearspace. Check each app's site for how it works and what it costs.
Other limits
- No strict mode: deleting Locked In or turning off its Screen Time access removes its blocks, and it sends no deletion alerts.
- Locked In blocks apps. Don't count on it to block websites; use Screen Time's website settings for those.
- iPhone only. No Android, Mac or iPad version. Blocks on your iPhone don't affect other devices.
